So what's going on at CVE?
Written by Alex

The Carolina Video Exchange of Gastonia, NC (known to the locals as CVE) does not have an official website.  That's too bad, because these days they could really use one to respond to all that is going on and being said. I wouldn't pretend to speak for the ownership of CVE and, in spite of what many of you think, I have no official relationship with them.  Lauren and I are occasional customers, no more, no less. But I would like to comment and make a suggestion or two regarding the two seperate issues that have tongues wagging these days.

First of all, back in December, someone was asked to leave the premises. As for what happened, I guess it depends on who you ask.  We weren't there that night, but we have a few friends who were, and they tell us pretty much the same story.  No need to get into it here, the specifics really aren't important at this point.  Apparently the couple that was asked to leave got upset, the situation escalated and it led to a “ban” from the facility.  CVE says it wasn't the first issue with them, the couple says they were treated unfairly.

It's what happened afterwards that is significant. The couple, using the power that is the internet, began posting their opinion at various places online. Others got involved, some for, some against. The rhetoric escalated and accusations were thrown back and forth. It was said that drug dealers, prostitutes and jaywalkers ran wild at CVE. At some point, it was said that all this attention and a few well-placed phone calls were going create such a public outcry against CVE that local law enforcement would have no other choice but to move in and shut down the place.  There were even reports of raids, arrests and public scandal.

Of course, this had the desired effect of scaring people away.  We have good friends that will go to CVE no more because of the threat of legal problems. We have others who have asked us about the police presence there, or the prostitutes, or the drug deals going down in the aisles and the parking lot.

Sorry to disappoint, but we have seen none of it.  I am not going to say that no one has ever sold a controlled or illegal substance on the property of CVE.  After all, you can buy and sell in the Wal-Mart parking lot, a gas station and even a church, if you can find two people willing to negotiate.  What I AM saying is that if it is happening, it happens the same way it does in shopping center parking lots, gas stations and churches.  You just don't see it.  I don't even see any evidence of it.  Hookers?  Lots of women dressed like them, but they are usually clutching the arm of their husband or boyfriend.  Nothing for sale.  Police?  Lauren and I were there on a Saturday night. The next day I read that there had been a raid and couples were hauled out half-dressed in handcuffs.  Somehow, I missed all that.  There were no police, no arrests, no handcuffs. But there was plenty of talk about it the next day online!

I have read that there are “no more couples” at CVE.  I have even read that it closed down a few months ago.  Well, as recently as yesterday afternoon the doors were open and there were customers.  Lauren and I know this because we were there.

Ignore the stuff you read and go in and see for yourself what is going on.  Go on a weekend night or a Wednesday evening and see for yourself that couples are still visitng the CVE.  I will be adding an article about the legal end of things in the near future but, generally speaking, use your head. Your big one. You will enjoy yourself, I promise.

The second issue is a lot easier to deal with. The 321 in Gastonia lost its long battle against the city of Gastonia over a 1994 zoning ordinance.  As a result, they are closing their doors.  Read that again.  It says the 321 is closing. Not CVE. You can read about it in the Gastonia paper.  321. Not CVE.  Got it?

Of course, one must ask the obvious question. If 321 had to close, won't the same laws affect CVE in the same way? The short answer is no. Neither the zoning issue or the so-called “one-use” rule apply to CVE, given it's location, age and facility usage.

Want more clarification?  My advice is to talk to the good people behind the counter at CVE.  They will be happy to help answer your questions and calm your nerves.

Great, honest info as always guys. It's been amazing to see how stupid it's gotten online about the place and how many blindly assume it all to be true.
