So what’s the deal with gloryholes? More than once we have been asked that question. Let’s see if we can explain what they are, what happens there and how we got attracted to the idea.
 What is a gloryhole?
Defined most basically, a gloryhole is a small hole, maybe 3-4 inches in diameter cut into a wall or partition for the purpose of allowing anonymous sexual contact. Gloryholes are found primarily in public restrooms and adult bookstore video booths.
For years gloryholes have been used by gay men, or those seeking anonymous sex with other men, for quick sexual gratification. In more recent years, as women have begun frequenting adult bookstores, gloryholes have become synonymous with anonymous sexual activity between either gender. Don’t they sell books in adult bookstores?If ever there was a name given to something without any attempt to accurately define it, it would have to be the adult bookstore. I have seen paperback books in a few stores, but that was a long time ago and they made up only a fraction of a percentage of the store's inventory. Adult bookstores should simply be referred to as porn shops. Or at the very least, sex shops for adults. Today, DVDs and Sex Toys make up the vast portion of an adult bookstore’s inventory, but they make up only a small percentage of the store’s income.
 Almost all adult bookstores have some sort of video arcade, or movie viewing area. Small, closet-sized booths line dark hallways in the back area of the store. Each booth has a television and a control panel, which allows a patron to insert money – turning on the television – and select among various channels showing a variety of adult movies. The rooms are usually only large enough for one patron – or two very close friends. While many men choose to watch the film alone and “take matters into their own hands” some prefer some company. That’s where the gloryhole comes in.
So how do gloryholes work?It's pretty straighforward, really. Assuming there is a person in an adjoining booth (or stall in the case of a public restroom) the process is pretty simple. One of the parties simply gets the attention of the other through the hole. If both parties are willing, the games begin.
What about couples? Not so long ago you hardly ever saw a couple in a bookstore and even more rarely saw them in the video area. That is changing. It is now common to see couples picking out movies or toys in a bookstore and it is becoming more and more common (depending on where you live) to see them in adult theaters and bookstores. I suspect that trend will continue. Lauren and I have enjoyed bookstore gloryholes for a long time, for a variety of reasons:

Here is my big disclaimer: Don’t break the law in your community. If you choose to break the law, don’t tell the judge that I told you to do it. Use common sense.
